What it's like to default on student debt

It's not fun.

It's an overshadowing tension, a source of stress that is best avoided.
When I was accepted to a prestigious private research university without significant scholarship, I decided against my father's advice and took out student loans to enroll.
Since graduation, I was laid off from a job that paid almost that per year and have not found an opportunity like that for me since.
What to do?
- Never eat out - Always budget carefully, thrift it - Save what I can, realize the payment is $1k and food and shelter are more important
My loan was refinanced so my university got their money anyways.
Wait it out?
Get letter from lawyer.
Start paying.
Car breaks down.
Can't pay.
What do I do?
Work hard, study hard, earn more!
